Interesting, if plodding, occult / detective hybrid that opens with the discovery of a dead prostitute (Karen Black). Lead investigator (Christopher Plummer) is soon on the trail of a sinister madame (Yvette Brind'Amour) and a cult of devil worshippers. Unfortunately director Harvey Hart's decision to open the movie with the death of the lead actress sucks all the tension out of the film. Despite that it remains interesting throughout with a good central performance by Christopher Plummer. Set in Montreal, the mix of French and English dialogue helps create a distinct, distancing atmosphere that adds to the disquieting feels of the film. Despite its structural flaws, the slow-burn pacing and mournful atmosphere makes "The Pyx" a reasonably compelling horror mystery. ( )

A prostitute is killed by Satanists.

The film-making is so completely awful that I literally found it depressing to watch. Sitting through it is an exhausting, miserable experience.
