This is a good book for beginning to understand the basics of Pragmatics. I recommend picking up some Semantics before tackling this book, but one could conceivably make it through fine without it. The exercises are thorough and the book is written "workbook" style with the expectation that you'll work out some of the problems along the way in order to better understand the material. Each chapter is also followed by a number of exercises meant to be completed after the entire chapter is finished. The book is a bit brief, and I think more material on some of the subjects is warranted, but if you're looking for an introduction that can be completed in a relatively short period of time, this is a good choice.
