I enjoyed this book for three reasons. First the language of this book makes it easy to read, there is a pattern to how the sentences flow together and you can predict the next sentence because of this pattern. I also like this book because of the illustrations and how it mixes with the sentences. One page will have an illustration of a red scarf, with the sentence “This is the scarf, woolly and red,” from this the reader becomes familiar with what that piece of clothing is and knows what it is later on in the book when it appears again. The way this book is written is different than others; it replaces key words with pictures. So when you are reading a sentence it will say “This is the scarf, woolly and red, that’s caught in the (picture of a zipper) that’s stuck on the (picture of a jacket) I wear in the snow”. This helps readers who might not have known the word jacket or zipper continue reading because they know what the picture in the sentence stands for. ( )

Very cute.  Minimal plot, but lots of help learning to read.  And yet more enjoyable than not - what child can't identify with layers of uncomfortable clothes, and then the relief of taking most of them off and having cocoa after an afternoon of excitement on the sled?  Well, maybe children who don't go out and play in the snow, or even have it... but they can learn from this what they're missing.  Or they can read one of Neitzel's other rebus-type early readers. Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0688045871, Paperback)

Rhyme follows rhyme as layer after layer of winter clothing ("bunchy and hot, wrinkled a lot, stiff in the knee, and too big for me!") is first put on and then taken off to the relief of the child bundled inside. Clever rebuses and jaunty illustrations make The Jacket I Wear in the Snow especially fun for prereaders and new readers.
