Let's be clear: this is not a short story. This feels like some cutting room floor stuff from an aborted prologue to The Martian. It has no plot, it relies on the reader knowing what's coming in the novel, and there's no new insights here whatsoever.

You know how, when you go to the deleted scenes section of a DVD and watch them, and you think, yup, I get why they cut that, that was lame. Yeah, that's what you think after finishing this.

This is not a short story. It's a curiosity that was better left in the "edited out" folder on Weir's computer. ( )
