I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy. Set in ancient Greece and the Mediterranean region at the time of the Trojan war (12th century BCE, or thereabouts), the world is as the people living then believed it to be. The gods, monsters, and heroes are real. Eno, one of the latter, is a hero for hire. He takes a job of ridding a small island kingdom of a harpy, but ends up in the middle of an attempted coup of divine proportions. The characters are fun. The pacing is excellent. The historical details are (I think) accurate enough for historical fiction, and the prose is pretty good. The editing, however.... The formatting and copy editing in the Kindle edition I read could have been better. Paragraphs in the first several chapters were not indented properly (although this was corrected, for the most part, later). I spotted several typos throughout. Not quite to the point of distraction, but enough to notice. ( )

This was a fun book to read; unpredictable, and full of plot twists. Excellent descriptions, great worldbuilding, and characters with individuality. Eno's quirky personality and straightforward approach make him very likable, and you're rooting for him the entire way. He's a man of his times, and not the least bit humble, but also not vain or petty. The language was very approachable, and the author's decision to use modern idiom and not attempt to mimic an ancient language style was the right one - it works very well, and makes this an extremely readable book, which I recommend to anyone who loves high-action historical fantasy.
