Picture book, travelogue, rock crit, biography -- this book is a bit of all of those. If you've read anything on Bruce written by Marsh, you've already got an idea of how this book is going to go. Marsh lets more of himself into the story this time, however -- and the book is all the better for having a fan like him tell it. There isn't really enough pictures/anecdotes/insights to put this one on my "essential" list, but that's just a Springsteen fan saying he can never have enough Springsteen.

(The one bad taste in my mouth was left by Marsh's contention that Springsteen fans rejected his "Other Band" because they couldn't accept the implications of their racial makeup. Marsh is not the kind of writer who takes a measured and grounded approach to these kinds of things, so I understand he was just dealing in hyperbole. But it struck me as odd that Marsh didn't consider the possibility that fans were merely turned off by an artist who sang about friendship and loyalty and community for many years, but then went ahead and fired the collaborators who helped him create those songs in the first place.) Dave Marsh, long-time biographer of Springsteen and best-selling author of Born to Run and Glory Days brings to this book his expertise as one of the most celebrated music writers in the world, as well as thirty years of observing, reporting, and writing about Springsteen from an up-close vantage point. The book is packaged by Sandra Choron, who worked as Springsteen's art director for almost two decades and has been an unofficial archivist of his photographic images. Authorised by Springsteen, the book includes artefacts and tour memorabilia as well as an illustrated timeline outlining the career and performances. All in all, it's an access-all-areas celebration of one of the greatest live performers of all time.… (more)
