This is a surprisingly great read for what appears to be a first novel. It is a mystery which takes place both in the present in a small English University city and in the early years of WWII in Minsk, Russia. Helen Kovacs, a graduate student in history, is murdered while investigating the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe and in particular the horror of Minsk with its concentration camps and many refugees. Were some of those refugees war criminals masquerading as victims? Helen's best friend, Faith, also an historian, picks up the trail. Is her own grandfather, a refugee from Minsk, not what he seems? There are many twists and turns, and dangers for Faith as she slowly unravels the story. ( )
