This novel was inspired by Giono's experiences during WWI and forms part of his pacifist writings. It has a propagandistic feel to it and I didn't get very attached to any of the characters. Nevertheless, there are some of the most visceral descriptions of trench warfare that I have ever read. I'm reading this in the context of a course on the novel as social critique so I definitely got a lot of out of it. I think that people interested in this period would definitely find the novel interesting.
