Quite a wholesome kind of coming-of-age/romance novel between a girl and her tutor. I enjoyed it overall, though a few parts were a bit cheesy and the end was a bit unfulfilling, leaving some things up in the air. ( )

A beautifully written novel about an orphaned girl growing up in Wales between the wars. ( )

Epigraph
What is longing made from?
What cloth is put into it
That it does not wear out with use?

Gold wears-out, and silver wears out,
Velvet wears out, ans silk wears out,
Yet longing does not wear out.

The moon rises and the sun rises,
The sea rises in vast waves,
But longing never rises from the heart.

WELSH, Seventeenth century

First words
I wakened to the smell of burning leaves, lay still, and breath it in, sharp on the frosty air.
