When Billie Shaughnessy's father dies, she finds herself heiress to a lumber company. Although she's spent the past several years in Seattle with her delicate mother, who's also recently passed on, she remembers with fondness the times she spent with her beloved father as a child, working as a "lumberjane," and decides to continue running the company herself and working alongside the men.

However, it's not quite the way she remembered it. Her father's partner is vicious and frightening, and she encounters anger from local Makah Indian chief Proud Eagle, whose wife, along with other members of the tribe, was killed in a mud slide caused by logging.

Billie is forced to reevaluate her childhood perceptions, as she falls in love and faces danger from her father's partner.

Of the Cassie Edwards books I've read, I have to say this is the best one so far. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 045121367X, Paperback)

Lumber heiress Billie Shaughnessy has arrived in Eagle Bay to bury her father-and fight for what is hers. Unfortunately, the land her father razed may have belonged to another...

Makah Chief Proud Eagle has every reason to despise the Shaughnessys. Billie's late father broke treaties, stole land, and caused mudslides which killed a number of the Owl Clan, including Proud Eagle's beloved wife. Proud Eagle is determined that Billie not take the last thing he holds dear. Rivals for the land, now they must find common ground before old hurts can be buried-and a mighty passion can take root.
