**Highly Recommended**

"Somewhat dated, but still one of the best books on the sociology of gay life. Examines gay oppression in terms of society and not the problem that the individual has to "adjust" to. Very insightful. Only about gay men."

Portland Gay Liberation, "The New Gay Library," 1972 (Portland, Oregon) ( )

This is a must read for anyone interested in
the history of homosexual studies. Hoffman,
a psychiartrist, plaYed a key role in depathologizing homosexuality and facilitating
a sociological approach to the study of gay life.
Once this book was published, Hoffman came to the attention of key persons in the social sciences and psychiatry. Thru personal meetings,
including myself, he impacted on persons such as
Judd Marmor, Evelyn Hooker, Richard Green, Robert
Stoller, et. al. ( )
