Constance, working as the lady's matron for the jail, awaits the promised badge from the sheriff. She relieves a deputy on duty with a male prisoner in a hospital room, but when the lights go out, the prisoner who was faking illness escaped. She's determined to prove she's capable of the work required and sets out to find the escaped prisoner. The sheriff could actually go to jail because the prisoner escaped under his watch. A story involving the sheriff's wife's societal aspirations and her jealousy of Constance adds an interesting element. The way they tracked down the person and some of the stories and characters along the way make this an interesting read or listen. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed this book with strong female characters and richly detailed language. It's historical fiction about one of the first woman police officers, inspired by real people. Now I'm reading the prequel, Girl Waits with Gun. ( )

Enjoyed this more than the first. Miss Kopp is an interesting character. Plus good look at politics and news of the era. ( )
