Gideon is about a young man living in a Polish Ghetto during the German occupation. He is a lucky and skilled young man who can slip into the outside world. First, he is working for profit, then for the resistance. The novel is written as a letter to children and grandchildren who did not know the truth about the writer's origins. At times this form jars the reader, as the children and grandchildren are sometimes addressed during important dramatic or action scenes. Still, the main character's inner struggles and the events he goes through, such as the month long resistance in the ghetto and the revolt at Treblinka are unique for young reader's Holocaust fiction.
