Starting off on David Weber's Off Armageddon Reef. Haven't read Weber for a while and hope this is as good as I want it to be ... Figured I had to break my string of dystopian novels. Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber ... satisfaction).
But anyway... I just finished Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion and have been trying to get through Off Armageddon Reef for weeks now and have just decided that they are, indeed, too darn long.
So I've just switched over to some Sookie Stackhouse books... at least ... ... Vorkosigan series and The Giver by Lois Lowry.
There is also the Safehold series by David Weber. First book is Off Armageddon Reef Main character is supposed to be a robotic type body with the memories of a real person downloaded into it.

Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and Off Armageddon Reef are two that have religion in them, but these are religion as political roles. In each case the religion theocracy is the enemy of the heroes. So there ... ... yuk it up.

Also tossing out a nomination for Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber. One that may suit you is Off Armageddon Reef, the first book in David Weber's new series. It looks like it's going to be a long history with an effectively immortal main character continuing through the books. ... his Mainspring universe. Promising!

Blood memory by Greg Iles ... following my own rules that I frequently break, I say nothing since I can say nothing positive. I'm of the opinion that Off Armageddon Reef is one of the "good-storyteller-in-spite-of-himself" books since I don't find it at all ponderous. Library, perhaps?
Top 4 SF for me, I fear, is ... ... the Silent Treatment to gush about the Prince Roger stuff and wave rather limp-wristedly (ouch!) about Honor Harrington. Off Armageddon Reef, with its Church Militant and Ignorant themes, appeals to me in a completely different way than either of those would (sounds to me like I'd dislike ... I just started Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber (shame on LT for not having a touchstone for him!) and am enthralled. I love the resurgence of respectability that space opera is enjoying, and this book is so far a wonderful example of the reason for that resurgence. ... Librarian research, not Quest for the Perfect Read. That makes me feel better. I consider myself absolved.
