Based on consultation of rare early guide books, title certificates, public and private photo collections and her own childhood experiences, the author traces the first 80 years of the historic Salisbury (Guest) House, Upper Beaconsfield built in 1888. Having grown up in this guesthouse in the 1940's and 50's the author gives a unique behind the scenes view of how this business operated, the changes to the property since its original land grant, availability of electrical and labour-saving devices, food storage, kitchen layout and functioning. In a world without TV, computers and mains water supply, the provision of guest activities, entertainment, room facilities and meals are described through words, photos and sketches.… (more)
