Will, one of the wards of the kingdom, awaits choosing day with great anticipation. He wants to go to battle school and become a great knight for Baron Arald. But Will is small in stature and doesn't fit the profile of the great knights of the kingdom. On Choosing Day, all of the wards of the kingdom, but Will, are placed in apprenticeships. This leaves Will peering at a future as a farmhand which he dreads. But the Baron asks for another night to think things over and when daylight comes, Will finds himself apprenticed to the Ranger. This is not at all what Will wants! Great adventure, tension, and fast-moving plot will make this book appeal to adolescent readers - some adults like me, too. I can't wait to read the second book in the series! Will is very disappointed when he is rejected for battle school, and apprehensive when the mysterious ranger Halt selects him as an apprentice. His natural talents and quick thinking save Halt and the kingdom. Goede jeugdserie in een fictief ridderland, waar een jongen opgeleid wordt tot jager, een select gezelschap van strijders van de koning. goed van sfeertekening, goed van karakterontwikkeling no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0142406635, Paperback)He had always wanted to be a warrior. The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger’s apprentice. What he doesn’t realize yet is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied . . . .(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:05 -0400) The first test round has been closed. Visit the Open Shelves Classification group for details. |

Basic Reason for Beginning: Memory loves this series to bits and pieces, as do a few acquaintances. So when I saw a copy of the first book, I decided to snatch it up and give the book a try.
Basic Reason for Finishing: Didn't, sorry.
Texture: Like being tossed about against rocks in a strong current.

Book Rereadability: Well, I didn't finish it, so none.
Author Rereadability: None, sorry.
Recommendation: I'd be copping out if I said 'children', I think. Besides, all the people whom I know loved this series were adults. If, however, you're a prose-snob like yours truly, I can't see you enjoying it. You'll probably want to take red markers to it and rewrite the whole thing. (
