This is my favorite book in the series. The book is the perfect length and the story flows really well. (Spoiler Alert) The only thing that I am sad about is how Pyrgus had to back out of being emperor in the end. Other than that it is a wonderful book and a highly recommended one from me. ( )

Grades 7-10: Herbie Brennan's sequel to his award-winning Faerie Wars will please fans while remaining accessible to those new to the story. In the land of faeries, brother and sister Pyrgus and Blue are coping with the death of their father, the Purple Emperor, the night faeries' evil ways–which include stealing the emperor's body and presenting the realm with a zombie–and their own problems. Pyrgus doesn't want to become emperor, while Blue has the uncomfortable need to quash her leadership ability in order to fit in with her society. While the royal teens deal with evil Hairstreak and other minions of the Night, they receive aid in the form of inspiration and physical assistance from two humans–Mr. Fogarty and Henry, the teens' peer who also happens to be sweet on Blue. Twists and turns are surprising, and the politics of the faerie world are nuanced and cogent and will engage listeners who often don't realize that fantasy can say a lot about the human condition. I think this book was better than the first! Ill definitely be buying the third in the series.

The only thing I didn't entirely like was the ending, I mean I get its leading into the third book, but something was...off for me. It just seemed to end abruptly. Other than that, The Purple Emperor was fantastic. Solid, likeable characters, and an interesting plot. ( )

Fun quick fantasy/scifi read with Faeries, demons, zombies and a parallel universe. This is a young adult book, the second in the series, and has tons of action. The biggest complaint I have is that it jumps right into the story with hardly any reminder of what happened in the last book. This wasn't too much of a problem, but it took me a few chapters to remember who everyone was, once I had things figured out the story progressed quickly. I will definitely be continuing with the series.

Henry and Mr. Fogarty help Pyrgus (emperor elect) and Blue (princess) to figure out a conspiracy, by antagonist Black Hairstreak, to kill a member of the royal household and to take over the empire after the death of their father. ( )

When Henry Atherton returned to his own life in the suburbs of London, he thought all was well in the Faerie Ream.  His new friend Pyrgus, the crown prince of Faerie, was about to be coronated as Purple Emperor.  But then Princess Holly Blue arrived on Earth, seeking Henry's help once more.

A plot to assassinate Pyrgus is afoot, but that's not the worst of their problems.  Pyrgus's father, the murdered Purple Emperor, has been raised from the dead by means of foul necromantic sorcery.  Now Lord Hairstreak and the sinister Faeries of the Night have seized control of the Realm . . . and driven Pyrgus and his allies into hiding.

Henry has no choice to return to the world of Faerie to aid his friends.  But that proves easier said than done when the mystical portal linking their realms goes awry.  Now Henry will have to scramble just to stay alive in a fantastic world that's constantly full of surprises . . . and danger.
