Trashy? yes. Kitschy? yes. But not exactly fun. After a slow beginning, the book does become extremely entertaining; however, it simultaneously becomes extremely depressing. The story's depressing content is not necessarily a flaw in itself, but coupled with characters that I had a hard time caring about, it put a bit of a damper on my enjoyment of the novel. Nevertheless, as far as beach reads go, they don't get much better than this. Don't expect great literature or happy endings. Do expect lots of drugs, lots of sex, and lots of old school diva tantrums. ( )

I feel like this was a poorly written trashy novel, but honestly I enjoyed every second of reading it. :) ( )

Loved it, despite the age of this book so much of it can be seen in hollywood and show busines even today. ( )

I know it's 'trashy', but I loved this book! It was so dark, and the brilliant thing is how it stands the test of time - despite it being written so many years ago, it is still relevant and fantastic! ( )

Valley of the Dolls is a zipper-ripper that has been called trashy, tawdry, glitzy, lusty, sordid and seamy — and that's just the beginning of its appeal.

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0802135196, Paperback)

Sex and drugs and shlock and more--Jacqueline Susann's addictively entertaining trash classic about three showbiz girls clawing their way to the top and hitting bottom in New York City has it all. Though it's inspired by Susann's experience as a mid-century Broadway starlet who came heartbreakingly close to making it, but did not, and despite its reputation as THE roman á clef of the go-go 1960s, the novel turned out to be weirdly predictive of 1990s post-punk, post-feminist, post "riot grrrl" culture. Jackie Susann may not be a writer for the ages, but--alas!--she's still a writer for our times.
