Biography & Autobiography. Performing Arts. Nonfiction. Humor (Nonfiction.) HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER â?˘ Tired of memoirs that only tell you what really happened?

Sick of deeply personal accounts written in the first person? Seeking an exciting, interactive read that puts the â??uâ?ť back in â??aUtobiographyâ?ť? Then look no further than Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography! In this revolutionary, Joycean experiment in light celebrity narrative, actor/personality/carbon-based-life-form Neil Patrick Harris lets you, the reader, live his life. You will be born to New Mexico. You will get your big break at an acting camp. You will get into a bizarre confrontation outside a nightclub with actor Scott Caan. Even better, at each critical juncture of your life you will choose how to proceed. You will decide whether to try out for Doogie Howser, M.D. You will decide whether to spend years struggling with your sexuality. You will decide what kind of caviar you want to eat on board Elton Johnâ??s yacht.
Choose correctly and youâ??ll find fame, fortune, and true love. Choose incorrectly and youâ??ll find misery, heartbreak, and a hideous death by piranhas. All this, plus magic tricks, cocktail recipes, embarrassing pictures from your time as a child actor, and even a closing song. I love a good celebrity memoir/autobio, particularly one from a comedic actor. This one did not disappoint. NPH is a national treasure and has so many fun stories to tell. And not only that, he gives it to us in a fun choose-your-own-adventure format!

Actually, I read the whole thing straight through, not because I’m a buzzkill, but because I didn’t want to miss anything. But I still 100% appreciate the spirit of this format.

I don’t have anything negative to say about this book. I think more grown-up books should be choose-your-own-adventures with recipes and puzzles in them. ( )

I loved the humour and honesty in this, but unfortunately the CYOA style was only funny for a little while and then my wrists started complaining about flicking back and forth, so I had to more or less go through in page order instead of CYOA order.

I really enjoyed it. I'm getting a kick out of reading autobiographies lately in general, but it's a bonus to read other people's coming out stories, especially when they are played out on as big a stage as NPH's. ( )

Fun read & just as engaging as NPH seems from his work & media appearances. The format makes it amusing while tricky to get a chronological read through but that's more the point. ( )

I'm a big fan on NPH. I watched Doogie Howser faithfully when I was in college and couldn't believe when our little Doogie went on to become not only famous but famous and awesome.

NPH has led a seemingly charmed life. He's got a great family, a cool career, and fun hobbies. He seems, in just about every way, like a person I would love to hang around with. He loves Disney, the Muppets, Broadway and reality TV. If he starts running marathons he might really be the perfect BFF for me.

In any case, as a person who really likes NPH, knows his whole career and is about his same age, this memoir is custom built for me to enjoy. I mean really - how could a bookworm of my particular age resist the Choose Your Own Adventure format? It even has the hilarious bad choice endings that will be very familiar to those who have read a bunch of CYOA books. (The venomous snakes was my favorite!)

It's a super easy read, the format is fun (but will require you to page through the whole book at some point to make sure you didn't miss anything) and for me totally worth reading. If you are looking for some kind of deep story or gossipy tell all you aren't going to find it here. I did find the chapters about him coming to terms with his sexuality quite interesting and there's a particularly funny story involving Scott Caan but other than that it's all quite tame.
