As a young reader, I had been enchanted by Love's "The Puppeteer's Apprentice," and went out searching for more of her books. This one, one of her first novels, cannot compare to her later writing.
When the book opens, young Rachel and her family are facing a drought and famine in the 1800's Dakota Territory. However, the book soon avoids this plot trouble by having Rachel and her younger brother sent away to stay with relatives, thus never seeing the results of these hardships at all. Rather, the book concentrates on Rachel disliking her new temporary home and throwing tantrums about the fact that her father intends to marry again.
The title has nothing to do with the book. Even though the back cover describes drought and famine, Love sends her characters away before we can see anything of the sort, into a far more tedious, plodding plot.
The main character of Rachel came across as spoiled and concerned about trivial matters, while her father is facing starvation, thirst, and poverty back on their farm. Of course, that brings the reader to question why he would not go to stay elsewhere as well.
Even good authors sometimes begin with bad books. ( )
