Hi Amy -- I'd suggest Astrid and Veronika by Linda Olsson, a Swedish author. I've not read Halldor Laxness, yet, - he's on my TBR - but have heard great things about his books, especially Independent People. He's an Icelandic writer. Enjoy!

I then went on over to New Zealand with Sonata For Miriam by Linda Olsson (comes out in March). I loved her book Astrid and Veronika so very much, and am feeling a little disappointed with this one. I will tough it out only because I love Olsson's writing.

TerrierGirl, I haven't read the Munro but I really enjoyed both The Namesake and Astrid and Veronika . I "read" the latter as an audiobook and the narrators really worked well in presenting the alternating points of view in the chapters.
