... to cushion the distress I felt when I finished this most recent book, I read a children's book by Lemony Snicket called The Bad Beginning. Done with that. Good story, quick read. Poor children.

Why I Chose It: It was on the shelf and it was short
A children's story, about three kids whose parents ... ... (and in need of some less-serious, although not necessarily happy reading), that I am now downloading the e-book of The Bad Beginning.

The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket: This is a reread-- I can't remember exactly how I found out about A Series of Unfortunate Events, but it was probably from staring at a shelf at a bookstore and trying to find something new to read.
Interworld by Ne ... I just started The Reptile Room, book 2 in A Series of Unfortunate Events. I read The Bad Beginning long ago and liked it, and I really thought the movie was well done. The kids did a great job and Jim Carey was perfect as Count Olaf. Children's books count as half, I'm thinking.

Then to the library to get the Bad Book and The Cute Book by Aranzi Aronzo and Contemporary Celtic Motifs by Alex Sherman. I read The bad beginning to my daughter, and we both liked it. It is refreshingly different from most of the kids books I/we've come across. There isn't too much dark comedy for children, I guess.
It is interesting to see, however, what happens later, and is that what I now find refreshing ... ... -- about the only useful thing I did, really. Grump, grump, grumble.
#211 -- The Somnambulist is reminding me of the Series of Unfortunate Events, except for adults, if that makes sense. So far, we have a narrator who seems to be somehow involved in the story, but that involvement has ... ... The Somnambulist. I really like it so far. Something in the writing style makes me think that it's a little like the Series of Unfortunate Events for adults -- quirky, sometimes freakish characters, a narrator who seems close to the story but not quite in the story (at least, at the point ... 13. Bad Beginning read it, liked it, but never was inspired enough to read any more in the series. Bad things happen to three kids, but it is done kind of tongue and cheek. The ... These are books I own but haven't read, even though I really want to.

I wasn't impressed with the first one (The Bad Beginning), I really liked the second one (The Reptile Room), and the third one (The Wide Window) was ok.
These books are the anti-Harry Potter, in that ... ... is my daughter's.

Books such as Diane Duane's Young Wizards Series, and the stuff by Tamora Pierce, Series of Unfortunate Events, Alex Rider Series, Artemis Fowl Series, all of Cornelia Funke's stuff, Harry Potter, et cetera - they are all mine.
