Published after her husband's tell all book about his own steroid use (hence the title for syringe steroid use or juicing), this is her version of her life before she finally left the bizarre marriage with Jose. Jose Canseco was part of the quadruplet of players: Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa who broke all records for Major League Baseball home runs. They are all ridiculed now but at the time MLB looked the other way and allowed their steroid use to continue. Now, if a player uses performance enhancers their careers are in jeopardy with loose protocols 'enforced' by the MLB commissioner. The book ends with Jessica studying at nearby Santa Monica College for nursing (good school). The book is a cautionary tale of emotional abuse suffered in her family of origin home and then continued further with her sick relationship with her husband Jose. Her final advice on the last page is for women to get out of abusive relationships with men before it is too late. Jose Canseco comes off like a psychopath enhanced by 'roid-rage'. In her case her child's care was a factor in staying within the relationship for as long as she did. A very fast read but published under a very good publlishing house, HarperCollins. My impression is that it was promoted at the time which baseball was constantly in the news with developments about how no one reported on the steroid use by so many players. The answer was that home runs were good for baseball and therefore the lack of reporting was substituted with storylines on the home run record derby. Not for adolescents due to explicit sex it seems to be written for a female audience. Jessica Canseco was always attractive and mentions as a teen that Lars Ulrich of Mettalica brought her back stage after a concert before another bandmember found them and got her to leave.
