The humor is more evident in these three stories. "The Lady Killers" shows the light touch with Willie's discomfort at clobbering women, even when they're trying to kill him. "Garvin's Travels", with Maude Tiller, is a hoot throughout, and features yet again another interrupted romance between Willie and Maude. "The Scarlet Maiden" shows Modesty's rare playfulness, when she plays along with a naive group of treasure-hunters, who fear that Willie and Modesty have discovered their find, and are attempting to cow them into submission. The artwork has been taken over by Neville Colvin - not quite at the level of Jim Holdaway, but quite fine and miles beyond Romero. ( )
