I think my top read of 2009 would have to be The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, which just blew me away.

... on Saturday, koalamom, so we're also feeling - YES! Hope you have a good time with your daughter. 133 mollygrace - Elegance of the Hedgehog seems like a good example of books you have to stay with to the end, even if at the beginning you wonder why you're reading them. Great book. I ...

Mollygrace: If you liked Elegance of the Hedgehog I recommend its prequel Gourmet Rhapsody. Much of the story takes place in the same Paris apartment building and some of Hedgehog's main characters are minor characters in Rhapsody. I actually thought it was the better book!

I too absolutely loved Hedgehog. It did take a little while though so I'd encourage you to be patient with the book.

I finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog this morning. Thank goodness for all the favorable comments I read here plus a New York Times review that I'd saved -- or I would never have stayed with it long enough to see what all the raves were about. Lovely book, and a very meaningful one for me. ...

Loved Elegance of the Hedgehog. Hope you two do also.

#51: Glad to see you enjoyed The Hunger Games. I will be reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog in the next few weeks as well. Care to share your dictionary?

... Games. Darn, I was hoping I could stop with this book and not read the sequel, but nuh-uh, I'm hooked. Picked up The Elegance of the Hedgehog - a little worried by all those dang big words - will soon have to dig up a dictionary...

... I've had Green Dragoners both times now that I've participated. And I'm so delighted with the books. eta, I received The Elegance of the Hedgehog and The Curse of Chalion.

I enjoyed Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and now I'm reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery.

ditto for me too. I liked The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

I too will anxiously wait to see what you think about Gourmet Rhapsody. LOVED The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

Stasia: I will be curious to see what you think of The Elegance of the Hedgehog ... lol. I loved it, but I think Richard was upset with the way it ended. I couldn't resist and started reading Gourmet Rhapsody at the store, and from the snippet that I read, I think I'm going to like it.

... disagree on this, lol. #264: Nice haul, Caroline. I will be curious to see what you think of the Barbery book. I have The Elegance of the Hedgehog somewhere around here, to be read next year.

#82 I liked Elegance of the Hedgehog a lot. Its musings are abstract and concrete at the same time, with a dose of reality. Like when Paloma muses about the death of twenty-two immigrants because they were crammed into a small apartment and could not get out, she thinks about her family's ...

What did you think of The Elegance of the Hedgehog? I've been thinking of getting that one.

Louanne, I did finish Elegance of the Hedgehog and although I didn't absolutely love it I did pick up its prequel Gourmet Rhapsody and enjoyed it much more! It takes place in the same apartment building in Paris and while some of the characters in Hedgehog are minor ones here, the story of ...

Well Louanne I'm sorry the time wasn't right for The Elegance of the Hedgehog but that has definitely happened to me. If you enjoyed That Old Cape Magic (as I did) you will love his other work especially Straight Man and Empire Falls.

I had to abandon The Elegance of the Hedgehog temporarily. It was just not the right time for that novel. I needed something with a lighter tone. Will try it again in the new year. 52. That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo. This was my first Russo novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ...

... Burning today--such a good movie! So, what was your favorite book this year? Do you have one? I wasn't as fond of The Elegance of the Hedgehog as others on LT were, so am looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Happy reading! Happy Thanksgiving too! :-)

I'm reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog. The translation works so well in English I was contemplating trying to find it in French so I could compare and brush up my French at the same time.

Marcia I thought of you last night. I belong to a book club held at my local library. The elegance of the Hedgehog was mentioned as a book to discuss. One member said she didn't like the book, all others in the group who have read it almost jumped out of their chairs at her telling her to ...

Wow, I just put myself down for a hold for The Elegance of the Hedgehog at my library and I'm number 212 for 30 copies. I haven't been this high up since I put a hold on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Who ARE all these savvy local readers?

Gotcha starred :) I picked up a copy of The Elegance of the Hedgehog before I saw it on the ER list, and haven't gotten to it yet. Need to bump it up the leaning tower of TBRs for post-move reading :)
