What starts our as a pretty straight-forward mystery / detective story turns into a tale about racism, culture, linguistics, heritage, and history with an unexpected, yet lovely, love-story thrown in. Niemi has an amazing ability to weave a story so incredibly different from his other stories that if it weren't for his distinct voice, you would think they were the works of different authors. The Pajala culture and its characters (some borderline mythical) are captivating, especially when observed through the eyes of the city-dweller. The ending is a little weird (and totally out-of-the-blue), but with the other oddities taking place during the course of the story, the ending still remains in the plausible realm and is quite satisfying. I'll happily read anything Niemi writes! ( ) no reviews | add a review
No library descriptions found. |
