Epigraph
Youth, large, lusty, loveing,
Youth, full of grace, force, fascination,
Do you know that Old Age may come after you
With equal grace, force, fascination?
--Walt Whitman
Youth, Day, Old Age and Night
There's nothing wrong with retirement as long as it doesn't get in the way of my work.
--B. Frowt, at 81
Dedication
Dedicated to my son, Leonard L. Knott, Jr., who at fifty, much to his amazement, becomes eligible for membership in the American Association of Retired Persons. In 1984, he would have been told to serve a fifteen-year "apprenticeship" in the National Association of Mature People, but the trend to early retirement changed all that. It also changed the title of this book, which began as Writing After Sixty and was altered in midstream to Writing After Fifty.
First words
Introduction: In the United States and Canada today, there are more than 25 million men and women who are sixty-five or over.
