Re-read Gateway (still excellent, in spite of some minor flaws that take it from 5/5 to 4.5/5) and posted a review.

... novels of Dan Simmons (his most recent stuff unreadable, alas). Liked the Altered Carbon books. I liked Gateway but never got around to reading the series. Hope it's not too gauche to say I like my own books ("Mind over Matter" series) as well.

... books (which is the Primary plot Arc). You will either love them or hate them. I'm reading Frederik Pohls Heechee Saga, 'Gateway','Beyond the Blue Event Horizon','Heechee Rendezvous','Annals of the Heechee' I'm just about to start Annals, the other previous three were very enjoyable. ...

Back to good old SF. A real classic this time: Gateway by Frederik Pohl. The novel is part of the SF Masterworks series, edited by Gollancz / Orion publishers. Pohl came up with this wonderful idea of a lost alien civilization that left behind docking stations with starships. These ...

#11 Space Merchants would be great. Another Pohl book that I would like to see on the big screen would be Gateway. Get rid of the boring psychaiatry sessions, just have the Gateway story; that should end as a two-hour story.

Gateway by Frederik Pohl has various tidbits (interviews, mission reports, classified ads, some computer code, etc.) interspersed throughout the text.

... The Scar, much more accessible. Having just reread Stranger in a Strange Land (horrible, horrible, babel) and Gateway (whiny, whiny, stupid), I really liked Neuromancer. Though if you want an updated computer networks/VR/evil rich novel try Daemon by Leinad Zeraus, not great ...

Vonini in 50 Book Challenge : Vonini's list (Sep 8, 2008, 3:52am)

... Pamela, which might take a while. Also picked up Beyond the blue event horizon to read yesterday, since I loved Gateway and this is the sequel.

... Jennifer Government yesterday, which was a light, fun read and started Beyond the blue event horizon because I read Gateway and loved it and this is the second part in the trilogy.

... An excellent idea - the last human alive in the world, and the life he lives, when everyone else has become vampires. 4. Gateway - reread four times. It's a simple premise - take a ride on a ship to an unknown destination, risking your life for huge rewards, and it's done extremely well, with ...

... me of your description of Life as we knew it. And two sci-fi books that I feel are underappreciated that you might enjoy: Gateway and Roadside Picknick.

Finished Gateway by Frederik Pohl. Brilliant idea - playing Russian roulette to find alien artefacts, and it's done well. Enjoyed the writing style - the dual timeline idea is done well, and the items included as appendages, from wanted ads to corporate policies, paints a picture of that ...

... these. Busifer, I agree on Last Light, in fact I'd say it's his least wonderful, except for those who hate Fionavar. Gateway was lots of fun, but that was a really long time ago, and it spawned a series of sequels that sorta drifted away from coherence, kinda like Dune. I'm one of ...

... the pointer, andyl. It's an interesting list. I hadn't thought of Fred Pohl for a long time. I remember enjoying the Gateway/Heechee books about 30 years ago. Anyone else remember those?
