Written as a teaching fable rather than as entertainment, it's not exactly a page-turner. Still, the translation by Gilbert is very readable, which gained it an extra half star. If you are interested in historical occultism, it's well worth your time, as it clearly presents what was seen as the ideal occultist at the turn of the last century. Whether anyone ever became Harttmann's ideal adept is another question. ( )

Started this book, but never got very far. It just didn't grab my attention. ( )
