The continuity of history, which means the control of the present and future by the past, has become a commonplace, and chronological limits, which used to be considered important, are now recognised to have little significance except as convenient landmarks in a historical survey.

Book description
Long after its publication in 1923, J. B. Bury's History of the Later Roman Empire from the Death of Theodosius I to the Death of Justinian (A.D. 395 to A.D. 565) remains a seminal work in the field that has come to be called Late Antiquity. Although some of Bury's views have been superseded, his two volumes (here combined) remain unsurpassed as a narrative of the collapse of Rome and the rise of Byzantium.
