What could have been a great story is suddenly ruined by political correctness (correct at the time of writing, that is) and descends into the worst kind of white man in Africa story. A young man ventures north from Cape Town to discover the fate of a distant relative whose boat had sunk off the African coast; he discovers quite early in the story that she didn't survive, and he feels relief that she didn't therefore bear children with the savages. How ridiculous! Sadly, there was still another half of the book to soldier on through, as the young man and his companions try to single-handedly wipe out the local faunae. ( )
