Gotta love those wacky wisconsin ladies! ( )
  kresslya | May 30, 2011 |
This book was so light that it almost floated away. There was almost no plot whatsoever - two middle-aged ladies, tired of their lives, drop everything and move up to Madeline Island to hang out and then start an apron-making business.

There was no plot! They do this. And then this happens, and that, and then they meet these people, and this happens, and then that happens, they find this, they go there, they all cheer, book over. Where was the arc? Where was the character and plot development? Just because a book is fluffy doesn't mean that the writer is exempt from making an effort to create a reason for writing the damned book. Was it to introduce us to the characters? They seemed flakey and pointless. Was it to tell us a good story? The lack of plot rules that out.

Now, I like Madeline Island. I've been up there several times and loved every minute of it. The Island itself is the best developed device in this book. If you love Madeline Island and would get a kick out of a book that takes place there, then you might like this. Otherwise, you'd miss out on all of the in-jokes and wonder why you're bothering with such a vapid little book. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0758211430, Paperback)

Every day in her busy Wisconsin beauty salon, Eve's clients trust her with their hair and their hearts. Unattached and not unhappy about it, she chugs along through life, fuelled by coffee, gossip, and the daily round of split-end crises and dye disasters - until long-time client Ruby proposes something completely wild. Maybe it's the perm fumes, but she wants Eve to drop everything and move with her to a rambling, dilapidated cottage way up north at the lake. What's even crazier is that Eve agrees. The lure of escaping their ordinary lives for total freedom is too tempting to ignore, although neither one of them expects it to come with a barn full of cobwebs, an eccentric cast of local characters, and a brand-new business to run. The difference is, bare feet, good food - not to mention the time to make it - and the serene beauty of the lake in their front yard make facing each new challenge a lot more fun. If life is what you make of it, Eve and Ruby are bound and determined to make it fabulous...
