Il libro di George Steiner tratta del fondo di tristezza ineluttabile che accompagna il passaggio dall'homo all'homo sapiens, di quel velo di malinconia che colora l'esistenza.
Quello che si dipana in queste pagine è un pensiero che pensa sé stesso: da un lato porta alle estreme conseguenze il «Penso, dunque sono» di Cartesio, dall'altro è
consapevole che il pensiero non potrà mai smettere di pensarsi fino in fondo, che ci è sempre presente e dunque non riusciamo mai ad afferrarlo davvero.
