Annabel is not looking forward to the summer. She is spending the summer in L.A. with her mom, while her step-dad stays in New York. The only good thing about summer will be the fact that her real dad's new family including Lucy, her step-sister, have moved permanently from Australia to L.A. When Annabel finds out that Ben, Lucy's Australian step-brother is also coming to L.A., she is ecstatic. Each chapter is told from alternating points of view that are both funny and genuine, and although we see how complicated the whole family situation is, we also see how love can exist in all kinds of families. An excellent book. ( )

This sequel to Steps picks up a year and half later, with Annabel's Australian stepfamily having moved to Los Angeles. Chapters are told by the teenagers connected by marriage (Annabel, Lucy, Wheaties and Ben) during their summer holiday in LA.
I liked this better than the first - Annabel is a bit more likeable. A lot of the Australianisms were again incorrect and annoying and like watching "Australians" on American TV/Movies.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0689866151, Paperback)

Instead of going to Australia this summer, Annabel is off to visit her dad in LA - much to her annoyance. No Australia means no Ben, the fit soccer player who was her first real kiss. And it's not even like Annabel is getting to travel solo - her mother and new baby sister are tagging along too. In spite of the usually family squabbles and rivalries, however, Annabel ends up having a great time. She gets on like a house on fire with Lucy, her stepsister, and Ben tops it all by making a surprise visit to LA. A warm and funny look at family life and its constantly evolving nature.
