Fiction. Literature. Romance. Up-and-coming wedding photographer Leah McHale's career is on the rise-thanks in no small part to the Wedding Belles, the elite New York wedding planning agency that always throws top-tier business Leah's way. So when one of the Belles asks Leah to fill in at the former First Daughter's wedding, Leah is overjoyed to say yes-until she finds out who she'll be working with. Jason Rhodes is the one man who was able to capture Leah's heart and, once he had it, promptly stepped all over it and left her broken. Now he's working side-by-side with her at the biggest wedding of the season, and Leah is determined to give him the cold shoulder. Despite his persistence, she is not going to fall for his charming, impish ways again. Not even if he still has that killer, irresistible smile . . .… (more)

Nothing special (I saw the big secret from the very beginning) but the author is a great writer and as an intro to the series it did its job. ( )

Please note that I gave this book 4.5 stars, but rounded it up to 5 stars on Goodreads.

At only 99 pages this was a short but rather hot romance read. Leah McHale is having dinner with a long time friend/boss from the Wedding Belles wedding planning agency in New York City. Leah can tell that her friend is gearing up to ask her a favor, and quickly finds out that she is being asked to photograph the former President's daughter's wedding with an ex-lover (did you follow all of that? I had a bit of trouble first too).

Leah is still angry that she found another woman in her ex's Jason's shirt when she went by one day a year ago. Jason is angry with Leah for not sticking around to listen to him explain. I am angry that Jason is pretty much the stupidest person alive who didn't think to just go by her house and explain. This is kind of sort of explained by Jason being abandoned and living in foster care, but I call B.S. on that whole thing. There was genuinely no reason for him and Leah to be apart except for Jason's pride. That was the only part of the story that did annoy the life out of me.

I thought the romance between Leah and Jason was great and you could feel the chemistry between them in just a few short lines. The sex scene was great and you can see why the two of them still both had a hard time letting go of each other.

The writing from what I saw was good though once again I still rolled my eyes at Jason's reasons for not having a conversation with Leah. The flow was abrupt at times. I know this was a short one, but we barely got any insight into the actual wedding that was taking place. I think I got used to all of the minutiae from reading Nora Roberts "The Bride Quartet" series so I was expecting some craziness surrounding the wedding parties.

The setting is I think in New York City. I was honestly confused about that. I thought for a few minutes things were taking place in Washington D.C. I just gave up though when we got to the end and we find everyone back in New York.

The ending didn't really have much there there, we can guess at what happens next. I am so going to buy the first book in the series to see if I like it as much as I did this one. ( )

ARC Review: From this Day Forward (The Wedding Belles) by Lauren Layne

Lauren Layne is a real asset to the world of romance. Her stories are delightful and explore so many avenues. From relationships between lovers, to facing family issues, even tackling self esteem. With each novel the core objective is being true to one's self. Such a positive message in an tantalizing yet irresistible package.

From This Day Forward centers around love and weddings. Weddings are associated with happiness and magic, but for Leah it's a way of life. Her career as a photographer allows her to capture moments of beauty. However, she knows in her heart that love is based more in fantasy than reality. The opportunity of a lifetime may boost her career but a blast from the past could cause more damage to her already fragile heart. Comparing The Wedding Belles series to Sex and the City or The Wedding Planner is a huge injustice. I was one of the few and far between that could not stand The Wedding Planner and hated Sex in the City. Yet I loved this. ( )

Well that was a bummer... H might be a grown up in years but, his TSTL behavior reminded me of a kindergartener.

From this day Forward by Lauren Layne is a 2016 Pocket Star publication. I was provided a copy of this book as an XOXpert, the official street team of XOXO After Dark.

This novella length story will whet your appetite and have you craving more from the new and delightful ‘Wedding Belle’ series.

Leah is a wedding photographer who has been given a lifetime opportunity to shoot the photographs for a former first daughter’s wedding!! But, she didn’t expect to run into her old flame, Jason. Awkward!

She and Jason were doing great, or so she thought, even though he is not sold on the concept of ‘happily ever after’, but when she stops by his place unannounced and finds him with a beautiful brunette, she realized Jason didn’t think their relationship was all that special.

Now she has to work with him on the wedding photos and keep things on a professional level, but Jason is doing everything in his power to rekindle that flame.

Jason has a rough background, and so is a little more cynical when it comes to true love, but Leah, his redheaded she-devil, has him thinking it could be possible, after all. But, he has to convince her she’s the only one for him, something she is making harder than it has to be, because she’s too stubborn and hurt to give him a chance to prove it.

The story is really cute, but it’s kind of predictable, and of course I picked up on a major clue somewhere in the middle and figured out how things went awry, but despite that, I really enjoyed reading this short story mainly because of the characterizations. While many authors can create a sympathetic female protagonist, the male characters are often stuffed into a certain mold and must stick to the rehearsed lines. But, not Lauren Layne. I love the way the hero goes off script and is very unpredictable, even a little mysterious, and so easy to fall in love with.

I can be pretty hard on novella length books and they rarely satisfy me fully, but this one is a lot of fun, and perfect for a lunch time diversion. ( )
