Real cute. Written in a very tongue-in-cheek, teen slang, breaking-the-fourth-wall kinda way, but I admit I laughed more than once. There are also jokes about RPGs - the "Nurse Sidequest" was hilarious in that regard. I was impressed by how much of the actual Shakespeare the author kept in this, again to great comedic effect. Some of the endings are happy, some very surprising (Juliet and Romeo discovering sexy roleplaying with Romeo dressing up as a female guard?! lol) and some just way out there (Juliet and Ophelia teaming up to destroy the world as deranged supervillains.) The illustrations are super-cute and fun. I don’t rate this higher mostly because the tone did get annoying and I breezed through it (in multiple stories) in like an hour. ( )

An entertaining alternative history of what could and could not have been in the lives of Juliet and Romeo.

I used to enjoy reading choose-your-own-adventure books when I was a kid, so when I heard that Ryan North had written one about the misadventures of one of literatures most famous tragic pairs, I couldn't resist. I went in with slightly lower expectations, thinking how long could the entertainment value last after reaching a few endings. I was delighted to find myself continually flipping back and forth, keeping various pages tabbed with as many fingers as possible, and trying to find as many endings as I could. I ended up grabbing a pencil and keeping a log of my decisions, which ones ended to endings I'd already read, and which passages I had already read. I kept this up, working backwards from each ending, until I had literally read every single possibility (at least I think so). I was even excited to be able to unlock a secret character! "A secrete character in a book?" you say. Yes! You have to read and find out.

It was actually through the course of the book that I realized that North had written [b:To Be or Not To Be: A Chooseable-Path Adventure|17938417|To Be or Not To Be A Chooseable-Path Adventure|Ryan North|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1371519375s/17938417.jpg|25149838]. Perhaps I'll check that one out next. ( )

I'm not normally a big fan of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, but this was kinda fun, all the way from the itty bitty print in the front matter through the various outcomes of Romeo and Juliet. (You can not only choose your own adventure, but which character. I admit it-- I switched horses in midstream for a different adventure.) Very tongue in cheek writing, which occasionally didn't match the mood I was in, but still fun for those who know Shakespeare, as, I suspect, for those who don't.
