I submit for consideration Adam Langer, especially his first, Crossing California; and Min Jin Lee, Free Food for Millionaires. But I have no idea how old they are. ... Chabon is one of my favorite books (if I had to pick one favorite, that one might be it). I also loved Adam Langer's Crossing California and The Washington Story, and Nicole Krauss's The History of Love.
Also, The Princess and the Goblin is a book? I had no idea! I LOVE that ... ... of my favorite books have Jewish themes or authors (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, The History of Love, Crossing California and The Washington Story to name a few), so I'd like to see what you guys end up reading.

The Town that Started the Civil War by Nat Brandt I finished reading Crossing California by Adam Langer in 1 day as it was my trapped the airport reading. I enjoyed it and thought it was hilarious.
Now I am reading Riding The Rails
by Errol Lincoln Uys, which I am sure will be less hilarious. ... is set in Chicago, and while it's not the focus of the story, it is relied upon and is also a pretty accurate portrayal.
Crossing California - I read earlier this year... it's set in Chicago in the late '70s (California is a street name in this case).

But it doesn't end at the "established" greats for me either. On a more contemporary front I quite enjoyed Crossing California by Adam Langer from a coupel of years ago. The real Chicago gem these days is I feel Aleksandar Hemon---loved his collection of stories The Que ...
