(Carmen, Germania 1918, b/n,77') Ernst Lubitsch. Con Pola Negri, Harry Liedtke,Leopold von Ledebour, Grete Diecks, Will1elrn Diegelmann,Sophie Pagay. Per amore della zingara Carmen (Negri), don José (Liedtke) viene espulso dal reggin1ento dei dragoni e diventa un contrabbandiere.Sempre per amore uccide il marito di Carmen, ma quando la donna rivolge la sua attenzione al pieadar Escamilla (von Ledebour), don José la uccide. Versione accurata ma non particolarmente originale della novella di Mérin1ée più che del dramma di Bizet (e infatti la storia è raccontata in flashback, di notte, da un viaggiatore accanto al fuoco di un bivacco: e originariamente queste scene di "cornice" erano tinte di rosso a mano). Fu l'inizio del successo cinematografico di Lubitsch, ma le qualità del film si limitano a una buona prova di Pola Negri e a una puntigliosa ricostruzione ambientale. Il film fu montato e presentato mentre a Berlino infuriava la rivoluzione spartachista. ( )
