I received an ARC of this book in return for a review.

This is the first Jacob Hayden book and I plan on looking up the previous ones to catch up on this detective's story. In this book Hayden finds himself caught up in two cases which have him needing help from an officer from New Jersey and the help of his girlfriend who is an FBI agent. In the one case he is trying to track down a hired killer who all of a sudden is operating in Washington, DC. The second cases involves little Benjamin Reeves, whose parents have been killed while he was hiding in a cubbyhole in the wall. But it appears that the killer or killers want little Benjamin and keep coming after him no matter where they place him. Eventually Hayden takes him in and with the help of his girlfriend try to protect him. But they are kidnapped and Hayden finds himself on the way to California in the trail of the murderer and the two victims.

There are twists in both cases. Hayden does come face-to-face with the hired killer but he alludes capture. And why is Benjamin Reeves so important to the killer of his parents? Why does it seem this person seems to always be one step ahead of Hayden and his team? These questions and more make this a very interesting book and one hard to put down. Prandy has created believable characters and a fast pace story. Excellent job. ( )
