A most outstanding example of speculative fiction or alternate history, call it what you will. I first read it when it was published, in the 1980's, and while I understood some of the modern historical stories such as the Chinese winning the space race or a different ending to the Iranian hostages and the 1980 election, other references went over my head. So I re-read it as an older adult.

There are descriptions of civilizations that never took off in the ancient world, a different take on Lawrence of Arabia, and the speculation of what would have happened if the South had won the American Civil War. The genius of these authors, the time in which it was written, and the pulling together of such literary minds make this a book series to read and re-read for all those interested in the what if?" questions."
