It's really quite well-written (a few extra commas here and there, but I'll put it down to the writer's voice), and goes into historic detail about these two contemporaries who never met, yet whose upbringing was so influential in their later reigns. The descriptions of the court of Francois I are particularly astute, as that court life extends down to the fiance of Mary, Queen of Scots, Francois II. The influence of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici (also contemporaries) are seen clearly at the French court and are not painted as asides to a greater tableau. Which is why I had forgotten that they were remembered - one is mentioned or the other, but I've never read where both are described side by side. And Elizabeth's decision not to marry is well explained, both as a political ploy and because she saw so many women she admired die in the process of giving birth. That insight into Elizabeth's unspoken reasons gives a whole new dimension to her. ( )
