A great starting sentence sets off this novel, leaving the reader thoroughly unsettled as a young woman faces her worst fears. Cool metaphors bring the reader closer to Cat, making her sudden departure from the story all the more disturbing. But the echo of Cat will reach a remarkable protagonist, setting off a fast-paced chain of events, lots of graphic violence, introspective recollection of a backstory not yet revealed, and appropriately inappropriate language.

There are some surprising smiles in among the violence of this tale. Cat’s mother Elena declares “I’m sick, not old” and sets to work with a laptop. Bad guys get what’s coming to them. And Tess, the ever surprising protagonist, reveals just enough hints of her past to make her present work. Like a female Batman, she’s learned great skills, but she isn’t a killer, rather “a woman doing what was right for no other reason than because she could.”

Action-packed, dark, hard-boiled, and with the promise of more, Kill Switch is a violent novel that doesn’t glorify pain, a dark novel unafraid to look into the darkest places where a woman can be lost, and a pleasingly complete story with the promise of more to come.
