The Namesake by Jhum ... ... that do nothing for me. It is essential IMHO, 'cos there are so many other fabulous ones in the wings. Interesting about Fugitive Pieces - I notice a few recently who have not enjoyed it. I still have not read it. Sometimes, talented prose is not enough to hold together a book. ... Margaret MacMillan's the library has. I can't remember being disappointed by a Canadian book (except maybe the last bit of Fugitive Pieces, which I think you loved.)
I'm still about 5 books behind. I've ended up on a thriller/spy kick for the last month and have turned into a Henning Mankel ... ... got 8 still to read!
Of the five read, I've listed them in order of favourites

From my review: I'll get right to the point: I was ... I finished A Spell of Winter yesterday and found it just OK. My final Orange July read will be Fugitive Pieces. Finished - and loved - The Colour, then Fugitive Pieces, which I think I'm still digesting. Now 1/2 way through Old Filth and loving it. Have a nasty head cold, so will get lots of reading done, in between naps. Now I'm really intrigued ... Fugitive Pieces will be my next read! I'm currently about halfway through A Spell of Winter which got took a surprising turn about 30 pages ago.
The different reactions to Fugitive Pieces are interesting. I loved it, both the story and the writing and would read it again for the writing. But I'm really not a poetry reader apart from some very few exceptions. On the weekend, I saw a Book of Michaels poetry in the library, Skin Divers ... I read Fugitive Pieces a long time ago and remember liking it. So I jumped when her new book Winter Vault came out I had to read it. My review of that book is similar to yours for this book. It has been awhile (12 years) since I first read Fugitive Pieces. I remember being enthralled with the beautiful writing. It wasn't until my reread two years ago that I fully appreciated the story behind it. I really enjoyed your review Jill. I found Fugitive Pieces hard to read but beautiful. Terri, I liked the first part much more than the second - hopefully you'll be the other way round! I really enjoyed your review Jill. I found Fugitive Pieces hard to read but beautiful. Terri, I liked the first part much more than the second - hopefully you'll be the other way round! Bewildered. Bewitched. That pretty much sums up my thoughts on Fugitive Pieces. Here's my review: http://mrstreme.livejournal.com/82879.html
34) Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels (review) ... Small Island, getting the different perspectives of the different characters was so well done!
I'm struggling with Fugitive Pieces. Feel like I have to pay such close attention and yet I'm unable - or unwilling - to do that. My Fugitive Pieces have now arrived in Toronto. I'm moving around from Biskupin, Poland to Zakynthos, then Athens, Greece, discovering Fugitive Pieces. I finished The Colour yesterday and loved it. Now reading Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels - what a poetic writer! I have a feeling this will be a memorable read. ... on LT but I'm now intrigued by its complementary story line.
I have two more Orange winners awaiting me at the library: Fugitive Pieces and A Spell of Winter, and then I will have read all of the winners! ... by John Bemrose

Out of the winners, I have on Mt TBR, The Road Home, Half of a Yellow Sun, The Idea of Perfection, and Fugitive Pieces. I'll be starting with Joan London's Gilgamesh however. ... three of the winners, the best of the three would be Half of a Yellow Sun, it was quite a revelation. But I also thought Fugitive Pieces was a piece of amazing writing.
I couldn't finish The Idea of Perfection, the characters were annoying me too much, might just have been my state of mind ... ... one not to read it. Words Unspoken even sounded like something I might like, so I want to try it. Fingersmith and Fugitive Pieces I must read. A Reliable Wife, My Husband's Sweethearts, A Pigeon and a Boy, The Winter Vault, The Art of Racing in the Rain, (so reminiscent of B ... ...
The Winter Vault is also on my tbr list though I have yet to read Fugitive Pieces. On novels, may I also contribute Anne Michaels' Fugitive Pieces - less on the camps, more on the culture and society, and the impact on the generations that follow. The UK Guardian had it as their book of the month recently and there was a great piece from Michaels on what she was trying to ... ... her man worship. I also finished Harry Potter and the goblet of fire. I enjoyed Harry Potter as well. Now I am reading Fugitive Pieces and am really loving this book so far. It is beautifully written.
