I'm having fun cooking my way through Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl. There are recipes instead of pictures in that book. Reichl is the food critic for The New York Times. The book is about when she first took that position.

I've gotten completely sucked into Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise. I've read very little in the food writing genre, but what I have read I've greatly enjoyed, so I'm thinking this may be a whole new branch of literature I can explore - yippee! ... ions.
Of course, The Art of Eating by MFK Fisher is crucial.
Ruth Reichl is very good as well (Tender to the Bone, Garlic and Sapphires), she is the editor of Gourmet.
Michael Pollan is getting a load of publicity lately for Omnivore's Dilemma, which is a good book.
