This is a fantasy in the sense that it takes place in a fictional world of kings, generals and princesses. This first volume manages to accomplish a lot. It introduces the main characters, gives a background story and sets up the plot: the king is murdered by his nephew who the princess is in love with. He has been a close friend of the family and turned traitor. The general is the princesses' bodyguard and also a close family friend. He has now escaped with her and so we have our story. I enjoyed this. I haven't read anything like it for some while. The characters are interesting and I look forward to the next volume. ( )
