This collection offers many insightful vignettes, short stories, and essays about encounters with a variety of people. The author has a sharp eye and excellent writing ability to convey the uniqueness and importance of such encounters, the meaning and value of which might become apparent only later in one’s life. The author and critic Francine Prose suggested recently that adult readers are more likely (than children) to “cross-reference” when they read, i.e. to compare people and things in a book to ones they themselves know. Pedersen’s book is valuable both in its own insightfulness and humor as well as possibly providing the reader with such cross-referencing, helping us think of people and moments in our own lives and reflect on their meaning. Familiarity with Whidbey Island and other nearby locations in Washington state may add to the reader’s enjoyment but is not necessary. Being a dog lover will greatly enhance enjoyment of several of these writings. Because Richard Russo is a well-known author, the cover of his most recent novel “Everybody’s Fool” will be better known than the cover of “Outdoorsy Male,” but I suggest that the featured star on the latter cover is the winner. Cover photo competition or not, the content of “Outdoorsy Male” is well worth one’s attention for the insights, humor, reflection, and also occasional surprising developments. ( )
