While there are many books on game design and adult learning, I would place this short (144 pages) book at the top of the list for anyone interested in game-based learning (GLB). The book focuses on designing and implementing learning-games, something Ken Thompson has been doing successfully for many years. (Look elsewhere if you are writing an academic paper on GBL and need to go deep into learning and game theory.) As an “essentials” approach to GBL, this book serves as a step-by-step guide to game-based learning, as well as a reference for accomplished GBL designers needing a checklist to avoid overlooking anything. The first three chapters provide a good overview of GBL that includes a discussion of the seven key ingredients for what makes an effective learning game. The next five chapters lead the reader through the process of planning, designing, testing, and implementing game-based learning. The appendix also provides some valuable resources including game facilitation, principles of team-based learning & simulation design, a short introduction to behavioral economics, and different models for building business simulations. This book is recommended for those needing a quick-start to building games for learning as well as those needing a reference guide, checklist, or new idea when designing effective games. Further, anyone involved in employee development or organizational change will find this book a handy resource for ideas. ( )
