I have such fond loving memories of pets I’ve had growing up. Each one earns a special place in the hearts of the families they belong to. This story reflects that special love between a child and her pet.

Penny gets excited when she discovers the recreation center is hosting a spend-the-night-under-the-stars sleepover. When she lists what she’ll bring, of course Jelly, her dog, is on the list. Unfortunately Penny and Jelly realize no pets are allowed.

Penny tries, with Jelly’s help to come up with some ingenious ideas of other Jellys, (Marshmallow Jelly, Pipecleaner Jelly, etc.), but none of them were a good substitute for the real Jelly. Travel through the pages depicting the tender love Penny feels for Jelly and find out the fun way Penny solves this dilemma.

Favorite line-“Her backpack was full, but Penny felt empty without Jelly.”

Heder did an excellent job of capturing the amazement, disappointment and happiness in the character’s faces. I especially loved the two-page spread showing the constellations depicted on Penny’s bedroom ceiling. It showed the wonder and awe the night sky delivers every night. ( )

Penny and Jelly, the girl/dog duo who first appeared in Maria Gianferrari's Penny & Jelly: The School Show return in this second picture-book devoted to their adventures. This time they're excited to go to a "Sleepover Under the Stars Night" at their local community center. Then they discover that pets aren't permitted. Penny tries to come up with a substitute Jelly, but nothing works. Is the star-watching ruined, or can she come up with another solution...?

Like its predecessor, Penny & Jelly: Slumber Under the Stars pairs an entertaining tale of the love between girl and dog with adorable artwork by Thyra Heder. Unfortunately, although I do think the story is engaging, I found myself getting annoyed at the underlying premise, that there is something wrong with asking children to leave their pets at home for one day or night, in order to participate in a community event. After all, some children who want to come might be allergic. Or some pets may not be the best behaved. The idea that the solution to this 'problem' is to hold your own private party seems to run counter to the idea of having community-wide events at all. A better option (to my mind) would have been to show Penny and Jelly each enjoying their night separately, and then joyfully reuniting the next day, thereby teaching young reader/listeners that if they do have to be parted from their favorite animal - something bound to happen in their lives - it isn't the end of the world. Leaving aside that issue, I did still enjoy the characters, and found Heder's watercolor illustrations very expressive. If this author/illustrator created another Penny & Jelly book, I would undoubtedly read it, but this one isn't going on any favorites list... ( )
