Grace seems to have it all, three children, a devoted husband and a life of travel. Her husband Steve has had demanding career and a rapid rise up the ranks. This means frequent moves and constantly uprooting his family. Grace begins to question it all and to seek change. ( )

This book started out a bit slow for me, and I thought it was going to be very predictable, but boy was I surprised! Great characters, who react in believable ways throughout. It was a quick, easy read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ( )

This was a great book. Not only did give a glimpse of the sacrifices our armed forces and their families make , it also showed that you can be a strong independent woman and still be happily married. The best part of this book was the fact that I couldn't put it down. Once I got started I had to find out what was going to happen on all the story lines. It definitely had some surprises. Susan Wiggs is definitely an author I would recommend and you couldn't do better than to start with this book!!

The book started out a little slow with a lot of Navy Jargon and not giving a clear understanding of the characters. Some that I expected in that first chapter would be characters were never mentioned again throughout the remainder of the book. But then the story took a turn and it was a wonderful story.

The family is believable and the relationships amoung them are well developed. You felt you could know these people and relate to them. The plot was good and the outcomes of the various situations the characters are in are not predictable which is always more enjoyable than reading a totally predictable book.

The story takes place between a couple married 20 years with 3 kids, the wife is realizing that in a few years the kids will be gone and the life and work she has done will have disappeared. Add to that fear, a husband who is in the Navy, gone for extended periods of time without her even knowing where he is and the fact that they have moved all over the world and have never owned a home. She is coming to grips with the idea of making her life her own and trying to determine can she merge the two lives, the old and the one she invisions or are they incomatible and one will trimuph over the other.

Very good book. Would strongly recommend it to others and would definately read other stories by this author.

A wonderful book that explores the life of a navy family. It was very well written, and seemed a true to life (at least to me) depiction of what a life of a navy wife might be like. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0778321479, Mass Market Paperback)

After years of following her navy officer husband on assignment around the world with their three children, Grace Bennett realizes that she’s left something behind — herself. Steve Bennett can’t understand the unraveling of his wife’s heart. He wants to set things right, but when a secret from his past is revealed just as he’s sent out to sea, their already-strained relationship is pushed to the edge. Now, with plenty of space to ponder the true distance between them, Grace begins to reinvent herself. Just as her new self is coming to terms with her family life, the unthinkable happens. A disaster aboard Steve’s ship shatters Grace’s world and all she can do is gather her children around and wait for news to come, good or bad. A navy wife’s worst nightmare collides with the cold truth that life’s biggest chances can slip away while you’re busy looking for guarantees. With sensitivity and insight, #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs explores the emotional rewards and sacrifices of love and marriage in this sweeping novel.
