( )It is a good book, but that's what I hate about it. It could have been a great book. It's Wal-Mart! However, I think I have rated it 2.5 stars because I just expected the world out of it. Also, aside from the information you get, I just think it could have been written better. However, hats off to the story and the commitment of the man "Meet a genuine American folk hero cut from the homespun cloth of America's heartland: Sam Walton, who parlayed a single dime store in a hardscrabble cotton town into Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world. The undisputed merchant king of the late twentieth century, Sam never lost the common touch. Here, finally, Sam Walton tells his extraordinary story in his own inimitable words. Genuinely modest, but always sure of his ambitions and achievements, Sam shares his thinking in a candid, straight-from-the-shoulder style. In a story rich with anecdotes and the “rules of the road of both Main Street and Wall Street, Sam Walton chronicles the inspiration, heart and optimism that propelled him to lasso the American Dream." Sam Walton explaining how he started from a single store in Arkansas to develop the world's largest retailer (Walmart). It may be the only management book you need with it's experience derived insights into psychology, systems, competitive markets and the general zeitgeist of post war America. Overall it's a brilliant book but he doesn't talk about the flip side of "giving people what they want" (low prices). The flimsy plastic lawnmowers and unsustainable trade deficit.
